NADIA BATSON EXPLORES THE ULTIMATE CARIBBEAN RELATIONSHIP DEALBREAKER IN “SINGLE”

The Soca powerhouse turns an unlikely relationship dealbreaker into a playful declaration about love, compatibility and choosing yourself

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO – In the world of dating, there are countless reasons to reject a potential partner. What if the ultimate dealbreaker is something a little more Caribbean? They don’t love Carnival. Nadia Batson turned that unlikely relationship dilemma into the premise of her latest Soca release, “SINGLE.”

Featured on the Deep Dive Riddim by Don Iko, the playful and infectious track is about choosing singleness when the person you’re with simply doesn’t understand or share your passion for Soca and Carnival. When the topic of this type of alignment is not positive, Nadia’s answer is surprisingly simple: “I’d rather be SINGLE.”

With lyrics that reference “popping the balloon,” Nadia taps into the language of the viral dating phenomenon Pop the Balloon or Find Love, where singles pop a balloon to signal that they’re not interested in a potential match. Her version comes with a distinctly Trinbagonian twist; though playful, it references a more serious question about relationships: Can you really build a life with someone who doesn’t love the things that make you feel most alive?

Soca and Carnival are not simply entertainment but are deeply connected to her culture and identity as a Trinbagonian. So when the person she is with doesn’t share that passion, the relationship suddenly faces a very Caribbean compatibility test. The official music video reinforces the humorous, relatable and unapologetic discussion, adding another layer to the conversation.

At its heart, “SINGLE” is about choosing yourself. It is about recognizing that compatibility isn’t only about attraction. It is also about whether someone understands your world, respects your passions and can celebrate the things that make you who you are. And if they can’t? Pop the balloon.

Love is important. But so is Soca and Carnival.
